Gusset not required

Postby Concorde » Sun Dec 11, 2016 3:27 pm

Plan says that no Gusset required for rib number 5 but the W16-05 rib comes predrilled for 07 Gusset but no Gussets included.
Also ribs 1 through 5 fit the spar caps nicely but according to the plan we need to trim them more, why ? Am I missing something ?

You are correct, if I recall there are only gussets for ribs 1-4.

You will need to trim ribs 1-5 to allow them to fit under the spar caps, as outlined in the plans. Rib 1 gets trimmed the most, and they get trimmed less and less through rib 5.

The ribs 1-5 fit fine under the spar caps. My kit is # 1684 ,wondering if that makes any difference.

Sounds like the new ones come pre-trimmed. Are they labeled 1-5? If so, I would say move on.

yep the new ones come pre trimmed and the gussets are only added on 1-4. 5 just has some holes.

You would think so........wouldn't you. The pre-notched ribs are a big help, but the holes in both the ribs AND gussets are NOT! Any time savings were cancelled out for me.

Ben, and anyone else that has not bent their gussets yet, go to the Waiex plans topics, and look up W19 woes. The bends are critical in their placement, and there is a grand solution on You Tube.

Is there any point of making a Gusset for rib 5 ? Or it's just some extra weight with no real benefit .

Ben,
Weight is the enemy. Don't add stuff not called for as a general rule. Ribs are not highly stressed members either.
