Oil dipstick for Tailwheel Jab3300

Postby bobc170a » Sun Oct 30, 2016 2:54 pm

Hi Guys,

This post is for the tailwheel Sonex or Waiex pilots out there. I have a Sonex tailwheel which I built and have been flying for about
a year and half. Checking the oil in my hanger I level the plane and all is fine. However I would like to travel with the Sonex,
not sure what other pilots are doing when they need to check the oil at some other airport.
My oil dip stick does not see any oil in the tail low position. Oil level is kept at just over 3 qts which is at the bottom of the oil stick.

Please let me know what you all are doing.

regards, Bob Ohlson

Some of us bought a Camit dipstick Replacement which is longer. (CAMit is Tango Uniform now) Others have brazed on an extension to the stock stick. Just be careful not to make it too long as it hits something down there. With my Camit one, its set to show about ¼ inch of oil on the stick in tail low condition.

I simply roll my Sonex out of the hangar and wipe the dipstick clean, replace it and then lift the tail to approximately level flight position for 4 or 5 seconds, then check the dipstick.

I found about a 10 mm (3/8") difference on dip stick between tail low and engine level on my 3300 (2200s do not show near as much difference). Had Ian make the first of the longer dipsticks for that. However, if you are flying with oil filled to no more than the half way point on standard dip stick, (more than that just froths the oil as discussed many times on Jab- CAMit forum and CAMit's full mark is about same as half on Jabiru stick) after filling and checking when engine level, let sit a couple of minutes with tail low and check again. You should see a bit of oil on bottom of your stick, and just remember that as your fill point. CAMit dip sticks are much easier to read. Might check with CAMit distributor to see if they have any of those dipsticks left in stock Might be the few products made in sufficient quantities for that to be the case.
