Anyone found a good write up on how to fit the cowl and locate the valve cover cutout?

I recently saw a project where the builder had removed the valve covers (and perhaps the valve train, can't recall for certain) in order to fit the cutouts. I thought this was an excellent idea that would have probably saved me a at least a week of work fitting, cutting, fitting, cutting etc. and resulted in a better outcome.
