Hi Peter, I'd totally go for one of those! (btw - thanks for the vents, they look awesome)
Taildragger Waiex in progress, tail done, wings done, about to mate wings to fuse,
then cowl, canopy, paint (photos): flush rivets, turbo aerovee, acro ailerons
(I built my RV7A and happily flew it for about 500 hrs)

This only works with a "jacking point" such as the the inner axle extension on the Tracy O'Brien axles. Steve Woodham (Sonex 892) has suggested using a couple of hose clamps around the Sonex axle fitting to act as a jacking point but I'll draw up something a bit more substantial. I'll put a post here when I have tried the new arrangement and posted drawings.

Hi Peter
I have never tried clamping hose clamps directly to the axles, it would probably damage the powder coating. I use the 2 hose clamps on the titanium rod. Just to be clear, I never trust this hose clamp arrangement to hold the aircraft up for any length of time whilst doing maintenance. I lift, remove wheel then chock immediately. It is what it is. Simple, cheap and light.

If I were to use your clever jacking method, on the standard Sonex axles. I'd probably either weld a small tab to the bottom of the axles. Or, utilize the 3/16" brake bolt somehow. I'm sure it wont be too difficult to come up with something.

This was my version 1 jacking point bracket, hose clamped to the titanium. I later discovered the hose clamps alone worked equally as well.

Oops, sorry about that Steve. Anything else you'd like me to misrepresent for you?

No worries Pete. Thanks for the offer, but there's nothing I can think of at the moment

Here's my final effort. I have changed the arrangement so that instead of pushing the handle down, it is lifted up. With the push down arrangement, maximum force on the lever was exerted horizontally, but it was difficult to find a reaction point. With the lift up arrangement, maximum force is reacted against the ground - much easier.

Peter -

Awesome stuff! Count me in for 1 or 2 of these, if you get some made for sale. I have stock axles; but I'm not done building so I can afford to be patient and either work out a hardpoint solution later, or take advantage of your fine engineering if you come up with something. :D

Hi Noel,
Thanks. I wouldn't use two of these at once. You might notice that it's pretty skinny. Relies on the other wheel for lateral stability. Have drawn a hard-point but it's amazing how many different ways things can interfere with each other so I need to try it first. Probably in a couple of weeks.

Thanks, Peter - I wasn't intending to! I just lose things, so I figured buying two will help.
And on a more practical note: it would let me keep one in my hangar and one in the baggage compartment of the Sonex, "just in case"...

Take care,
