Peter Anson, regarding the "Tracy O'Brien axles. I'd like to know more about them. If you would tell me more about them I would appreceiate it.

Here's a link to the Tracy O'Brien site. http://www.tracyobrien.com/sonexaxle.html The axles are very well made and I think pretty cheap considering the good quality. On the basis of this one purchase I'd say that they are very good to deal with. I did have to modify mine slightly. The sleeve that extends on the outboard side of the flange was too long for use with the standard drum brake (it's intended for fitting a disc brake) so I had to cut that shorter. I think if you specify that you are using the stock Azusa drum brake they will supply it with a shorter sleeve.

Should change the topic, but Re- Tracy Obrien axles and fitting Azuza drum brakes...

Rather than cut anything off the axle assembly I made an aluminum spacer about 3/8" thick to mount the drum brake backing plate.
A little was skimmed off the spacer to make sure the brake drum assembly had the right position over the brake shoes.
Backing plate and spacer is bolted up to the axle with the 4 bolts. Brake plate is drilled and tapped for the wheelpants.

This way if I ever decide to upgrade to the discs, they will go straight on.

This fitting holds the wheelpant on, a 10/32 thread for the screw. The fitting is held in by the axle split pin. No probs after 113 hrs.

Hmm, a couple of years ago now. Your'e not the first to ask me either. I think the method I used was to draw a thin Texta line along the gear leg through the hole centre; fitted the axle and set the alignment; transferred the Texta line down the gear leg; marked the top of the axle tube on the leg; removed the axle, measured the distance from the hole to the top of the axle line; transferred that distance to the axle, giving me the hole location; drilled through one side only; fitted the axle and checked alignment and drilled through. The only critical bit is getting the first line parallel and you can do that easily by using a bit of extruded angle as your straight edge. You just sit it on the round bar and it's parallel.

Hi Doug, that's a neat idea. I thought of doing something like that but not with a hose clamp. Cheap, light available.

Peter. I always use 2 hoseclamps. one alone will sometimes creep.

For the Tracey O'Brien side topic. For transferring holes to replace the axle, I found this photo of a really neat jig on the net.
