Welcome to a really cool Sonex site! I went back and forth between Sonex and Zenith more than once...but the issues with the Zenith wings on one model made the final decision easy. I also really like the folks at Sonex (and the Zenith team is also good folks).

I admit to obsessing over this decision for about 9 years. :)

I am also planning an AeroVee (saw your other post) taildragger...currently working on the rear wing spars.

It would be easier to read your posts if you used punctuation and separate lines....just sayin'....

It's great to see you here! Regardless of what you build, always good to "see" a new face around...

Welcome number 88 from Idaho.
Count me as one who also almost ordered the 701 tail kit.In the end cost was the deciding factor for me.I wasn't confident in Valley engineerings claim to 100hp on there vw and I believe the 701 needs a minimum 100 hp to realize it's true potential.Valley engineerings vw claims 100hp at 3800 rpm turning the prop with a psru.Even if their claim is legit it comes at a cost of over $11000.
The Rotax for me was out of the question ,pushing the final cost of the 701 to between $35000 and $40000 the way I had it figured at the time.
The 701 /750 are great designs.Chris Heinz knows his stuff. but in the end the Onex won.I have the final cost for the Onex pegged at under $25000.for my configurations.I think the 701 would be awesome on floats
Cheers.

thanks for the welcome. I don't make my $$ on a computer in fact not very often i even have to write and it is a good thing because if it wasn't for spell check you would really be confused . I really like the sonex but in Idaho we have a lot of mountain runways. I asked sonex about bigger tires and was told it wasn't recommended . So i am thinking 701 with vw from greatplains. Looking in to floats to see how hard it is to switch back and forth for lake days and mountain days. Not planing on ordering kit till this fall so i have some time to figure it out. Viking looks good but we will see how it goes don't think i will put any $$ out until it is siting in the back of my pickup. What have you heard about the vw from GP price is almost same as aerovee. Has a psru i think from Valley engineering . 105 hp at 4200 rpm for take off 72 hp at 3400 rpm http://www.greatplainsas.com/2011iss4.pdf page 9 . I haven't found any thing bad about GP yet but still looking

this is what was sent back to me . ( Hi Ben,

Thank you for your interest in the Sonex.

The Sonex can be fitted with 500-series tires but this is still not the size that would allow it to get in and out of the same strips as a 701. While the Sonex can handle dirt and grass runways, they must be maintained for regular use as runways and not just
