Bill,

What type of keyed switch did you use for the master switch? I have been thinking about using a keyed switch for quite some time now and figure it is time to put one in. My problem is I have not been able to find one that I consider robust and reliable enough. I appreciate any suggestions.

I used a simple starter switch in place of a push button starter switch. I just wanted to keep it simple.

It is a regular keyed ignition. I simply used the momentary side as the starter switch. It does nothing else. It only prevents the use of the starter without the key.

Dana, So you have a key instead of a starter button...on the Aerovee? You explained it so simple, seems to make complete sense. Why is this not the norm out there? Why would anyone want a button, which can be used by anyone when a keyed ignition alone is doing both?

Example. Could I simply replace my starter button with this?

Because that just looks cool and is safe. Especially since I may be sharing a hanger with a stranger.

Here is the switch I used. It is a standard automotive ignition switch. I only hooked up the "starter switch" part.

The short answer is yes On mine I have a key that is in series with the master switch. Since I'm hangared and the canopy is always locked when traveling, I leave the key switch on and the key in it. I only turn the key switch off and take the key when the canopy is open at fly ins. The reason I didn't use a key starter switch was I can't count how many times I got in the Cardinal and strapped in to realize the keys were in my pocket. When I use the master key and take it while I fetch pancakes at the fly in I always put the key in my shirt pocket so I can get to it without unbuckling. I like using just a toggle switch 99% off the time.

I plan a similar arrangement, but will put the keyed on/off (not momentary) switch in line with the momentary push to start button. Normally the key can just stay in and "on" but when I want to disable the start I can turn it off and take the key.

I didn't want ANY extra complication on the master side where my ignition is powered.

By putting it on the master circuit I don't have to worry about someone turning on the master switch and draining the battery. Either way will prevent the danger of someone swinging the prop.
