Odyssey pc 625 won't charge.

Postby Sonex541 » Thu Jul 09, 2015 8:31 am

I bought a brand new PC 625 battery last year and has been great so far. I plug it in the trickle charger if I don't plan on flying for a few days just to keep it 100%. Well last week I was showing off my new led landing lights and I left the master on the next morning the battery was completely dead. I tried to charge it per instructions and nothing it won't hold a charge , will they warranty it.

I did the same thing at one point. They won't warrantee a battery that was completely discharged but there is a way to bring it back. You have to buy a chager made specificially for an absorbed glass mat battery. Oddysel sells one for about $80 that works really well.

Normal battery chagers as well as the cheap trickle chargers won't bring the battery back to life. The odyssey chager uses a different cycle of some sort that will.

One other issue you may still run into when hooking up the oddysey charger is that it won't start charging if it senses very little voltage on the leads from a completely dead battery. You have to hook another 12v battery such from your car or a lawnmower in line with the oddsey battery to get the charger to start. Leave it hooked up that way for an hour or two and then switch the charger over to just the oddysey battery. It will take overnight to get the battery back to full charge but 3 years after killing my batttery the first time from leaving the master on it is still going strong.

Adam,

Keith is 100% correct. The charger won't start its cycle of charge or maintenance if it doesn't find a base voltage.
I did the same thing on my Waiex 4 yrs ago with killing the battery. I use the Deltran Junior and it wouldn't start with a completely drained batter. Boosted it with conventional charger for about 30 minutes and then went to the Junior, since I was leaving the hanger and didn't want to cook the battery with the 30 yr old Dayton charger.
So far so good.
My startup voltage normally shows about 12.4. Operating voltage at cruise normally shows 14.3. This with the conventional Jabiru stator/Kubota regulator set up.
I think your battery will be fine.

I did exactly what the manual says today and it looks like its taking a charge. I have had it on the charger all day and the voltage is starting to come up and stabilize, we will see what happens tomorrow. The weather is suppose to be nice Saturday so I'm trying to do what ever it takes. Even if that means buying a basic motorcycle battery or some sort of replacement battery

If you can get the Odyssey to charge, its a really good battery. I'm still flying on one that must be over 8 years old. I had tried a Li-Iron for a season but left my master on once and it died, died DIED. No resurrection. $230 learning experience. Put the Odyssey back in and two years later it serves me well.
The second battery to fool the charger makes sense. I know my smart charger wouldn't even try without being fooled.

I just did the same thing last week and after charging overnight there was no juice. I bought this battery from Batteries Plus, a chain of battery franchises so I took it back to them for warranty replacement. They kept it overnight on their charger and it came back to full charge. So if you have a battery store that stocks this battery they can possibly get it to charge without buying the $80 charger.

Also killed one that way. I have an avionics master switch in series with the master switch. The avionics include a GRT EFIS, and a Xcom radio both of which are always on when that avionics master is on and light up nice and bright. However, when the avionics master is off, all looks dead but master switch can still be on, and that eventually runs down the battery. Came up with following fix to prevent killing another battery.

Placed one of Radio Shack's smallest packaged 12 volt red LED lights (fits 1/4" hole) across that avionic master switch. The EFIS and Xcom radio provide enough of a ground path to light that small LED when the master switch is on, but avionics switch is off. Turn on the avionics master and the light goes off so only lights in the one condition when master switch is on but avionics switch is off and makes nice bright reminder to turn off that master.

I had the same problem with a Luscombe that I had when I left the master on. I charged the battery at 2 amps for a couple of weeks and it came back. I could still fly the airplane but had to be airborne
to use the radio. I had the Armstrong starter.
