1 EGT unstable

Postby Gripdana » Sat Jun 06, 2015 5:57 pm

Went out today and finished up gross weight testing. My run up was normal. I had 30 rpm drop when I turned off the secondary and 5 to 10 rpm drop when I turned off the primary. All was normal until the middle of the flight. The #2 cylinder EGT would read around 200 to 400 degrees for a bit then would read normal. The CHT was where it should be. I figure I may have an EGT probe issue. I know I should check the engine block ground but would that effect only one probe? Is the only check to use a candle to heat the probe and see if it reads?

There are multiple ways to check things Dana, but one really quick and simple option is to swap two of the sensor leads where they plug in. Do you have an MGL system with an RDAC? If so (or if you have something similar), just swap your #2 EGT lead with another one and see if the large variations go to a different cylinder. So, for example swap your #2 and #3 cylinders and if the temperature "jumps" migrate to cylinder #3, you can assume that sensor is bad.

This also gives you a good opportunity to check the leads of that probe where they plug in.

Just a thought...

Thanks that is a great idea and place to start. I'll be back at the airport in the morning for my "personal" memorial and flight for Jeremy and Mike. I'll give that a try.
