Stripped Spark Plug Hole

Postby Glenn.hunt » Wed Apr 15, 2015 4:22 pm

After multiple times of removing plugs the inevitable has happened. I stripped the left rear bottom plug hole. This coincidentally is also my hot cylinder. I would rather not use helicoils. Time-serts look like a more robust fix. Before I spend the $$$$$ on the Time-ser kit, I was just checking to see if anyone else has one that I could rent/borrow. Someone out there must have already had this happen to them :( If not, I will buy the kit and make it available for others use.

Aircooled.net has the kit you will need and rents it out for $25.

The rub is that the kit they rent is 14mm, and our heads are 12mm. You can buy a 14mm kit for $29.00 at Autozone but the 12mm is $135.00 and found only online.

Hi Glenn, There are probably other options, but I came across this Recoil kit on ebay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Recoil-Thread-Repair-Kit-M12-x-1-25-Metric-Fine-/291439198134?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item43db213fb6 $50 Australian is about $37 US but you might have to negotiate postage. Don't have any experience with Time-serts but I have used Recoils (they are just an Australian equivalent to Helicoil) many times and have never had one fail. The kits are are good quality.

There is an article in the July Kitplanes about installing Heli-Coils. The sample project is putting them in a VW spark plug hole.
