Sun Shade

Postby kmacht » Tue Apr 14, 2015 1:51 pm

Any recommendations for a sun shade that fits the sonex canopy? With the warmer weather coming and less hair on my head each year I need something to help prevent a sunburn during longer flights. I saw the Kroger shades but the want almost $160 for one. I am looking for more of a less expensive stick on or suction cup solution. What is everyone else using?

I have the Koger and think it was worth the price. Its been installed for over 250 hours. With the shape of the canopy you have to bend it so that it has good contact. The double sided tape gave up last year and the rear came unstuck. I replaced all the original tape with auto trim tape the full length and it has hung on very well. Alternatives I have seen that work are the fabric screens that stick on with suction cups and a dark collored film that stick on by static cling. Both are easy to re-position Both are available at various auto parts stores. The best part of the Koger is the ability to slide it open where there is a lot of traffic (Oshkosh) and close it when the sun shines.

I used the cheap Autozone "static cling" window film. Two of these stuck to the top of the canopy really knocked down the amount of sun coming in.

+1 on the Koger, it is one of the best purchases I have made on the airplane. Very nice and so worth the price!

I ended up buying two of the static cling shades from Walmart for $4 each. I flew with them last weekend and so far am happy with it. They can be readjusted during flight but it is much easier to get them placed before taking off. I'm going to hold off on the Kroger shade for now but will take a better look at them during Oshkosh this summer.

You have ever been the scrounger and the built-it-cheaper guy! :-) That's why your plane cost several thousand dollars less than mine to build :D
