Remote Battery Charger

I thought someone might be interested in the remote battery charger I finished installing today:

I wanted a way to charge the battery without removing the cowl. I took note of the ways others have done it, but I kept thinking I'd like to do it differently. This is what I came up with, and it works like a charm! Just in case I'm not around a charger that has these male/female connectors, I have an adapter I made that plugs in here, but has two traditional alligator clips that I can connect to the alligator clips on any other battery charger.

Mike, can you provide the source for the bolt on socket plate? I've been looking and have never seen it. I've been looking for a solution for my Odyssey charger for a while now and your solution is the solution I've been looking for.

I got most of mine at Airventure last summer. I found a lot of these wiring systems on motorcycle web sites (they use similar batteries).

This is the end I connected downstream of the battery. I cut off the negative connector and added a fast-on to go on my ground block.

I bought a few of the basic wires with connectors so I could end up with what I needed. One word of caution: with multiple wires and connectors the + & - get swapped. So just make sure you trace the + & - from end to end to make sure they match. I messed that up, actually, but the battery charger caught it and the "check" light went on. Swapped a + for a - and all was well again.

For you KISSers out there who don't have to lock their cockpits; the canopy sits on the cord from my Batter Minder Jr. with no problems, and the plug on the battery side tucks under the dashboard with a bit of Velcro.

If you have an Odyssey, you can purchase a charger/maintainer from Aircraft Spruce specific to the Odyssey series. Included in the package is a hookup/extension of you don't want to use alligator clips. I attached this to the battery then snaked it down to the cowling exit area next to the breather line. Now all I need to do is plug in the charger to this line and it's good to go. No cowling removal needed!

I plan on installing a hot 12V socket in my cockpit, both for power in flight and for hooking up a tender on the ground. Battery tender sells a 12v socket adapter for a few bucks. I wouldn't recharge the battery this way but I think it's fine for a tender.
