stop pre-heating

stop pre-heating

HI everyone, what do you think a safe temp would be to stop doing a pre-heat on the Aerovee seeing as spring is Friday and warmer weather will someday be here.

We guaranteed a mild spring here in Colorado because we finally installed a oil sump heater on Mike Niedenthals plane last weekend. Gonna be in the 70s this weekend. Someone had to take the spear.

I preheat if the oil temp is below about 40. I use a multimeter to test the actual oil temp.

Hope yours works better than mine. Have Tannis multi-point pre-heater on my 3300 and it was still a very cold winter, is snowing like heck as I write this, and forecast to see about 10°F Sunday night. (The system does heat the engine very nicely.)

The sump heater (Katz pad) works pretty well. I have one on mine too. Put it on a timer to kick off 2 hours before I typically arrive. No matter the outside temp, the oil is around 80F. When I show up, I put a milk heater to blow some warm air under the cowl to raise the battery and head temps a bit.
