Upholstery and baggage sling.

Postby rizzz » Wed Mar 11, 2015 7:44 pm

My Sonex upholstery with optional baggage sling arrived this morning.
(Always good when new toys arrive in the morning)

Tried fitting them in place, however, there are no instructions included so some questions came up:

The left side panel does not have any holes/cutouts for the (std) trim tab/flap detent angle & throttle quadrant, I guess because people do different things with these.
Are we just supposed to cut out the holes in the appropriate spots ourselves?
I have not been able to find any pictures of what others have done here.

Also, the baggage sling, how is it attached to the fuselage?
No instructions on how to do this.
Do I make a metal strip or something with and rivet it in place?

What have others done.

Cheers,
Michael

Michael, the interior is a "cut to fit" project. I made about 4 different mods to mine using a local upholstery guy. He would cut, snip, and sew a mod for about $10 or $20. He also sewed in velcro strips to the baggage sling perimeter and I used the stringers and bulkheads for the opposite velcro. It 's more than adequate to hold the loads....

I attached the baggage sling with sheet metal screws and finishing washers. For the trim lever i cut a hole in the plastic backer and cut the leather in an X so I cold pull the tabs to the back and attached with contact cement. Made a nice edge around the hole. the side walls were attached with Velcro to a tab on the upper longeron like the photo in the instruction sheet (see above post for link)

Hmmm, no I did not.
If all else fails, go look at the Sonex website :)

Yep, looks like I might have to visit the local sewing/alteration shop after cutting some holes into these beautiful pieces.

Just an update on this,
The right panel did fit nicely as it came (as you would expect).
The left panel I cut out a square in the plastic back plate and an X, in the fabric to fold it around as Bill suggested above.
The only way I could get the flap detent angle/lever and trim tab to work was to cut a larger rectangular shape from the top forward corner of the panel. Again cutting the fabric slightly larger and folding it around the plastic.
Not ideal but looks alright.
I might make a small separate plate now to install above the trim tab/ the flap detent angle to finish it off.

Anyway when I was done I spent quite some time just sitting in my plane :), Yep, I can see myself flying this thing very soon.
