Ameri-King AK-450 ELT "voice transmitting capability"

Postby Rynoth » Sun Feb 08, 2015 9:42 pm

I recently purchased the AK-450, it being the least expensive option I could find to meet FAA requirements (plus being called for in Sonex plans) for an ELT.

I want to document here that the "voice transmitting capability" of the AK-450 is no longer supported in this product. Even though it's in all the online advertisers/vendors documentation (including aircraft spruce) plus the documentation INCLUDED with the ELT itself (which I received last week), there is no longer a microphone port in the ELT itself to allow you to use it as an emergency voice transmitter.

I raised this issue with ACS (whom I purchased the ELT through) who then contacted their supplier, who confirmed it is no longer included in their product. The AK-450 has no voice input capability, despite all of the marketing you may find.

To be clear, this ELT still transmits on 121.5MHZ (that I've confirmed) plus 243MHZ (I have not confirmed), but there is no way to add your voice via a mic to the transmission.
