New MGL Efis - 7" Discovery Lite

Postby Gunther » Wed Aug 20, 2014 5:38 pm

Hello to all. In case you haven't heard about it, MGL has a new simplified iEfis that looks very promising. There is a discussion and pictures on the VAF site. MGL plans to produce three sizes, 7", 8.5" and 10". The big decision for me will be one 8.5" vs. two 7" units. I'm thinking that a pair of 7" should fit well with a central throttle quadrant.

It seems to me that MGL has a unique advantage with their fire wall-mounted RDAC unit. It should be easier to troubleshoot egt, cht and other engine transducers while greatly simplifying the wiring to the efis. For those of you with RDAC experience, are you pleased with the product?

Hi Gunther,

I have a standard RDAC mounted to the firewall of my Waiex on the engine side. All connections run to it, and then one wire runs to my Stratomaster Ultra XL. Overall, I'm thrilled with the MGL line and the RDAC in general. Just like you said, it's great having all the sensors stay on the engine side of the firewall for ease of wiring.

Very cool stuff with the new Discovery Lite's. I'm sure they'll be very nice!

I'm very happy with my MGL Mini Xtreme (and my MGL V6 radio). Works great, and like you say, the firewall RDAC has kept everything simple.

Reviving this thread, as I just purchased this 7" iEfis discovery lite unit. Link to MGL website for the product:

http://www.mglavionics.com/html/iefis_lite.html

I've powered it up from a battery outside the airframe to play with it and so far I'm very impressed, it's packed with features and will take some time to learn. I'm looking forward to customizing the screens to present exactly what I want to monitor, though the UI for this process will take some learning also. You can download the simulator/screen designer here: http://www.mglavionics.co.za/EXP2upd202 ... ulator.exe. I also got the RDAC XP MAP, SP-6 compass and V6 radio to go with it.

I believe the Sonex factory Aerovee Turbo also now has one of these iEfis units installed.

Here's a pic of the unit in the Sonex factory turbo (posted on MGL avionics page on Facebook.)

Ordered mine and received it a couple of weeks ago. This little baby will look good in the Onex.

You are correct! The iEFIS Lite performed flawlessly on the trip down to Sebring. Very impressive instrument. I am still learning all the functions and features of the unit. It will do a lot!

I like it!

I will make the first flight in the morning using my new Discovery Lite. I still have a couple of unresolved setup issues but nothing to affect safety of flight. I will post a report here and may post a short video on YouTube.

My flight with the new MGL Discovery Lite went well. I was able to work out a few bugs and play with it enough to begin to really appreciate its capabilities. I still have a lot to learn about using it and I want to make a customized screen. A few observations:
1. It is really cool!
2. It will do about everything I could ever want.
3. It is not as easily readable in bright sunlight as was my old Stratomaster Ultra XL.
4. Installation is not too hard.
5. The set-up is not fun because of the lack of really basic documentation. Matt at MGL told me that they are working on it.
6. Support from MGL is good. Although I haven't asked for much, it has not been difficult to get a timely response from Matt.
