Vertical Stab light

Postby matthewurban » Thu Jan 15, 2015 6:21 pm

Would any of you recommend installing a strobe light on the tail of your vertical stabilzier? Looking at pictures it seems most of you dont. Im debating whether or not I should and if i do any recommendations? I know its not required by the FAA to have a light on the vertical stabilizer if I have lights on the wingtips.
Thanks!!

Given the low cost of wingtip navigation/strobe lights, I think most people make things easy on themselves and go that route. Personally, I went with the Aveo Powerburst LED system; for a grand total of around $400, I have a bright set of lights that will probably never burn out, add almost no weight, and take almost no power.

That being said, its your airplane so do as you wish!

I added a strobe on the tip of the vertical stabilizer as, from what I understand, that is the best place for a single strobe to be seen well from all directions. It is a streamlined wing tip style that I fiber glassed into the tip. I also have a red belly strobe that runs off of the same power supply but I haven't installed it yet.

I have no wingtip strobes but I do have some fierce LED Wig-Wag landing lights in the leading edge of the wings.

Great thanks! those pics are really helpful. It seems like most fiberglass a strobe on which is an option otherwise im thinking I may drill some holes into the top of the fiberglass tip and poke some LEDs through. I know its not required but that way it will improve my visibility for night flying and it might be a little easier for installation. Ill post a pic if I do decide to place a light.
