Fitting Aft Wing Skins - aft spar measurement

Postby Gunther » Fri Jan 09, 2015 9:59 pm

Hello to all. Did anyone else have difficulty fitting the upper aft wing skins using the 19 inch measurement from wing station 0.0 to the rear spar attach hole? I have clecoed the upper aft skin to the rear spar and find that 18 - 7/8 provides a much better alignment with the rib cap centerlines, especially toward the front spars. Since Tech Support is closed for the weekend I would be thankful for any advice that anyone can provide.

Thanks,
Gunther

I think the most important things are to keep the wing square and to make sure there is no twist. My wings were scratch built and I believe one was a little under 19". If you are building from a kit, I would probable go back and check your measurements again to make sure...in general it seems the kits hit the factory dimensions. But if you have a square wing with no twist, then you should be fine.

I am also scratch building and just happen to be skinning my wings right now as well. Working on the first one which is right, and my 0.0 wing station came in right at 19 on the money. I have been making every measurement possible too be sure my wing is going to be square as well. I consider myself lucky that mine worked out, I am curious now to see if the left wing will work out the same. I anticipate to drill the skins tomorrow or Sunday, and then vacuum forming my leading edge skins Sunday or Monday. Nothing but adventure in the days to come, that is for sure! :)

Frank and Vic, thank you for your input. I have re-measured very accurately and now find that I'm out by 1/16 inch. It has been difficult to find a truly square carpenter's square. I had to sort through several squares at the hardware recently and found most to be out a bit, one was out 1/8 inch in 18 inches!
