Noisy Magneto

It is a 4220 which is the mag you describe. Scott said he replaces the capacitor before he installs it on the engine.

Problem solved! I was able to make the problem go away yesterday finally. I got a set of shielded spark plug wires (the original set that comes on the mag) and a set of Great Plains spark plug adapters which fixed the problem. The strange part is that the electronic ignition still has the automotive style wires and plugs. At least now I know what the cause was and what the fix is. I'm not sure this will be my final solution, I'm going to research some ways to put the automotive type plug ends on the shielded wires. I have heard of the plug adapters coming loose from vibration. Anyway, just thought I'd share my findings

Here's my 2 cents worth. We will be flying 1 st flight any day now with our waiex # 143 w jab 3300 . We've spent the last week isolating ignition noise that was getting into the radio and headsets. First make sure mag/coil to distributer cap has a good quality HT lead. Good quality spark plug wire leads . (Suppressive wires) & Resistor plugs. Run a #4 wire round ground plus a 1 inch wide copper flat strap ground. Go to your local electronics store ( not radio shack they won't have them) and buy ferrite beads. Any control cables, wires etc going from engine area into cockpit panel area is a great source of RFI. The ferrite beads come in different sizes and diameters and clamshell type also. Make sure carb is grounded to engine. There will be no magic bullet that is just one thing , it will be a cumulative effect. Put the ferrite beads on everything. HT leads , spark plug wires, control cables( throttle, mixture, etc) , wiring like your thermocouple leads ( bundle up and put the clamshell type ferrite on). Antenna coax , make sure your antenna is grounded good. We will put them on the headset wires and try that too. The ferrites are cheap, buy lots of them . Earlier posts have good ideas to check , like points capacitor etc , make sure your p leads are shielded/ grounded. We have eliminated almost all the RFI ignition noise.
