Muffler Leak - Straight Pipes on Jab 2200

I have a Jabiru 2200 on Sonex 122. I am using the muffler that came with my engine. My Sonex has been flying since 2007 and has 225 hours.

I pressure test the muffler at each annual. I've had to have cracks welded on the muffler can several times.

I'm considering finding SS tubing and making straight pipes. Has anyone done this? If there are successful installations, could you provide sources of materials, methods of construction, mounting, and photos, if available.

I am busy with a Jab 3300. Is their any side effects to the engine by running it without a muffler?

I don't know of any sonex/jabiru 3300 installs that used a muffler. I don't think they fit.

I have a jab with a 2200 been flying same 2008 500 hrs i have had no problems with exhaust yes they just slide on held on with springs they all leak. I would hope jab would come up with a better design not as yet. How have you sealed yours.

I don't believe that I'm telling you anything you aren't aware of in that with the separate cylinders and heads on the Jabiru the exhaust needs to be able to move as there will be some movement, and engine heat will make things change causing eventual cracking to any solid set-up. The Aerovee uses two into one on each side but like the Corvair has a one piece head assembly for each side. The earlier Aerovee engines had four individual straight pipes and if that's what you are considering I think you are on the right track.

Just my $00.02 and worth exactly what it cost ...

Thanks for the replies on this discussion. Any ideas where I can source the stainless tubing to make straight pipes?

I haven't sealed the joints between the muffler and engine pipes. There is evidence of some leakage shown by the whitish dust on things nearby.

It's winter here now and I've chosen not to fly when it's this cold. My annual is due on April 1,2015 and I'll check this again.

I will have to disagree my older 2200 have ball type mountings to head new have flange and gasket same as the intake. There was a little movement with the ball type, I would like to try a flange with bolts down at the muffler. Lets face it there is not a lot of movement at the heads the length of the pipes would take care of any expansion. Before flight I warm mine to near operating temp well when oil temp is up.

I beg to differ re 2200 exhaust flange and gasket.. that is NOT the current arrangement, the gasket went out years ago. It is now a chamfer end fitting on the exhaust pipe into a chamfer on the head
