WIX-F11 question (Sonex or Waiex)

Postby Bryan Cotton » Mon Dec 01, 2014 11:53 pm

Hi all,
My forward tunnel zee has a pilot hole for the wing attach bolts through the forward wing mount angle. On the referenced page it shows no hole there yet. When do you drill that hole?

WIX-F11 question (Sonex or Waiex)

Postby Sonex1517 » Tue Dec 02, 2014 2:17 am

Bryan

While I am building a Sonex, my zee had that hole. I piloted it through and should not have done that.

If this hole is the same as on my matched hole kit, do not drill it through! I believe tech support would say the same but please verify with them.

(For what it is worth, my decision to use that as a pilot and drill through cost me dearly. I had to redo the wing rigging)

Thanks Robbie! I had not drilled that hole yet. Sounds like I shouldn't!

Do NOT drill that hole. I ended up having to replace my right side fwd wing attach angle during rigging because I had drilled that hole. The actual hole location will be closer to the side panels.

OK, now I am worried! I am scratch building TD Sonex. Which exact hole are you fellows talking about? I am comming up on wing rigging this spring and dont want to make what appears to be a mistake , if I havnt made it already. I am not in front of my plans yet today, but could there be a better explaination of which hole is being discussed? I "think" I understand which one, but...well.. I am nearing 70 years old and I have to make sure of lots more stuff before I run off in any partictular direction. Ha Ha !! thanks!! :?

Bryan-

I agree 100% with Robbie and Ryan.
Don't up drill or transfer that hole to the forward wing attach angles.

Joe - if you are scratch building this hole will not be in your forward Z-Tunnel. This is a remnant hole from the CNC process Sonex is using to jig the part or something along those lines. Te hole is a mistake in their manufacturing process and as others have testified would lead you to drilling it out when in fact it shouldn't be.

I caught my error early enough and was able to make my parts work (PM me if anyone wants to go into this deeper)...

It's the small hole at the edge of my larger wing bolt hole that effectively ruined the part. The only reason you might put it there is if you pilot drill every single CNC hole in the forward tunnel Z provided in the kit. Since the hole isn't in the plans, I don't think it's an issue for scratch builders. These pics are of the right forward wing attach angle.

This pic is after I drilled out the rivets and removed the angle from the fuselage.

Thankfully my left side was ok.

Those photos look painfully familiar.

Joe - not an issue you should see.

Thanks Scott and Robbie...Indeed, I did check and I have no hole there...on either side. I sure wish my parts looked like that!! I suspose if I had a CNC they could have?
