Aerovee crankshaft assembly

I did buy the preassembled crank & hub assembly. But now I am getting ready to assemble my AeroVee, and I see that the AeroVee assembly manuals says I should remove the bolt from the hub/crank to put Loctite on it. Wouldn't the Loctite have been applied by Sonex when the assembly was performed?

The Loctite is already there. No need to disassemble anything on the factory-assembled crank.

When I assembled my engine back in May, I had the same concern. I removed the bolt and could see no evidence of locktite on the threads from where Sonex assembled the crankshaft. Anyway I'm glad I took the bolt out, reapplied locktite and torqued to spec.

I've had two pre-assembled crankshafts, first in spring 2012 then another in summer 2013. Neither had any indication of Locktite on the threads when I removed the hub bolt, applied Locktite, and retorqued to spec. I don't mean to start a disagreement...merely stating my own findings.

I can only speak for the crankshafts that I have personally assembled since I've been here at Sonex (i.e., since February 2013.) All of them have had the loctite applied. I know because I put it there. :)

Ok.....that clears up any confusion on the Loctite question. Or Not.

I sent an email to tech support, but I doubt if they keep any records on this for each crank & hub assembled and sold.

Hey All,
My name is Jonathan Mitchell and have been interested in building a Sonex for about ten years. Planning to pull the trigger on a set of plans and the Angle bundle in January and this is my first of the many postings I plan for here. I realize this is not the forum for introductions and the reason I am posting here is to ask about the crankshaft assembly. Has anybody ever considered cold soaking the crankshaft in a cooler with dry ice instead of a deep freezer? As a former full-time heavy equipment for a John Deere dealership, when rebuilding transmissions and various other press fit components using dry ice was the only way to go. I can't think of any reason for not doing it this way and should provide a few extra seconds for assembly. If done correctly and the hub is at 400+, from similar experiences it should drop on or require very little tapping. Just a thought fella's and figured I would pose the idea considering this has been a source of problem for some builders.
