I've never heard that! The Sonex spins nicely. Very predictable. I did spins and spin recoveries multiple times before trying anything else, like aileron rolls and loops.

The Sonex flight manual clearly states that in bold type that " Intentional spins in the Utility Category are prohibited." Anything over the 850 lb Areobatic Category max weight would be in the Utility Category. Given a 620 lb airplane, 180 pilot, and half fuel, all you FAA pilot builds can spin till you puke! Lol

The aerobatic max weight is 950 lbs. No problem for my 650lb airplane, 200lb self, and full fuel. I would double check the balance first to be sure though.

Rolls, Loops and Spins!

Postby Sonex825 » Thu Oct 02, 2014 12:40 am

Good to know! Not saying I never did one but always thought I wasn't supposed to. I was out doing some mild aerobatics this evening. I think split s's have got to be one of my favorite things now but I always loved spins too. I am going to have to start reintroducing them to my joy flights.

Mr. Gammaxy, you are correct about the updated aerobatic weight. I was reading from my flight manual-an older one--and it stated the 850 lbs I quoted. The website now clearly states 950lbs. Was that just a numbers change or did that reflect any structure change? With 950 lbs, even some big boys can get busy inverted!

I need to get caught up on what has changed now that I am getting close! I bought plans #116 bout 14 years ago, and have scratch built all of it--even sawing the old spar cap blanks into shape. Work, other planes, family, mand illnesses all took time away from the Sonex, but she is close now!

That is a good point. Of course you should be flying solo. My plane is just at 700, I'm 180 lbs and I fly with about half fuel. (but I probably have 2-3 pounds of GoPros mounted!)

For those wondering if a Waiex recovers from a spin, take a look. Note, I'm solo and am wearing a parachute.

Rolls, Loops and Spins!

Speaking of parachutes, anyone recommend a certain type of parachute for the Sonex. I am in the market.

Speaking of parachutes, I have a Softe Wedge parachute. This one is strapped on your back, so you still need a cushion for the seat bottom. It weighs 15 pounds and is comfortable to wear. Parachutes need to be repacked every 180 days at a cost of around $60 by an FAA certified and qualified parachute rigger. I have also tried a Long Softe which you sit on. It worked well too, but I think the Wedge Softe is more comfortable.

Mine is a National Flat pack. 2 inches all around the back. If you have short legs, the wedge might work fine for you. Pushes my butt too far forward.
