Pulling the engine to check the flywheel

Folks,

I am very slowly making my way through conditional inspection (too much work stuff going on) and I finally have to pull the "spider" off to check the flywheel bolts/screws on my old Jab 3300.

Two bolts are fine, but the other two .. I assume everyone has been pulling the engine to get this done, and maybe installing the bolts the other way on the way back in?

Swapping the bolt orientation is what I did while I had it out. I really don't want to pull the engine out next time.

Hi Steve, if you have a way of removing the spider to check the flywheel bolts without pulling the engine I'd love to hear it. I even bought a small scissor-lift trolley for doing the job. I only move the engine about 6 inches forward of the engine mount and can leave most wiring connected but I can't see how you can do the check without that extra room.

While you have the spider off, may I suggest you make a mod to it that might make it easier to do the inspection in the future. Details are on the Jabiru NA website. Hi Pete. As far as checking the tension without removing the motor, I haven't tried it yet, that will be the next attempt which is not too far away. I do know it was absolutely impossible when I did the first check. The spider bolts could not be removed without first removing the motor.
This task actually makes a 2200 jabiru engine quite appealing.

That's a neat idea and I'll probably do the mod next time just to save removing the spider but I think pulling the engine will still be necessary on the 3300, fortunately more than a year away for me now.

This task actually makes a 2200 jabiru engine quite appealing.

Well, yes, but not quite as appealing as an extra 40 HP.

Don't know what is different about my 3300 installation but it wasn't necessary to move the engine forward to pull the spider in order to change the flywheel screws or to check their torque. It also wasn't necessary to change the direction of the spider bolts to be able to install or remove them. I have since modified the spider so as to be able to access the screws without its removal and that sure makes this check much easier.

On mine, the two bolts on the right (pilot's right) run into the fuel filler structure and the engine mount top bar respectively, so there ain't no getting out of it for me.

I just wanted to feel like I wasn't the only one!

Awesome idea to drill out the star plate, although I think I will be putting the bolts in the other way regardless after this is all done!

Managed to get mine out without pulling the engine when I had to replace the stator in 2016.

So your bolts didn't hit the frame or the filler box? Well, I wish that was me!
