There were quite a few earlier 3300 that were only torqued to 18 ft lbs. Up to around SN 500- 600 I think. This of course falls under the "improper torque" category. Under the "faulty combustion" category, I can't help but wonder about the uneven fuel distribution that the intake/carb arrangement on the Jabiru. It is astounding how much a 5 degree rotation of the carb can bias the EGTs. And this would be easy to overlook.
The point is: "nothing wrong with them at all" should be perhaps "nothing found wrong with them". After all, something had to be different to cause them to fail. Given the complicated nature of this, not seeing all causes is not a surprise.
