Ignition system shielding

Postby gammaxy » Sat Apr 05, 2014 10:46 pm

I notice the AeroVee manual does not indicate any shielding of the Magnetron P-leads. This seems unusual to me, but I understand these work a little differently than normal magnetos.

Has anyone had issues with noise that they traced to ignition shielding?

Anyone install as shown in the plans with no trouble?

In my plane all the radio noise is caused by the electronic ignition. When I shut off the electronic ignition the radio is very quiet.

That's interesting. I expected the electronic ignition to be quiet since you have 12v (with some switching noise on top) running from the switch to the ignition while I expect the magnetrons probably have 100+ volts switching on and off at the switch.

I wonder if the source of the noise is on the engine side of the firewall due to other circuits being in close proximity to the coils or spark plug wires.

Am I correct in assuming your Magnetron P-leads are wired directly to the switch with no shielding? Do you ground to a fuselage ground near the switch?

Yes, just a plain wire running from the magnetron to the switch and then to a ground on the panel.
