AeroVee Heat Muff (Cabin Heat)

Postby Sonex1517 » Mon Oct 07, 2013 7:31 pm

I wanted to start a new topic as this subject came up today and I was about to post anyhow....

I live in Chicagoland, which means I need cabin heat. I have purchased some of the required components to install it, and wanted to start this thread for those interested.

I have the following from other builders as information for what is needed - I make no claims as to authorship nor completeness, and your mileage will vary most widely:

Heater Shroud with attach collars;
stainless Steel Control Valve;
Push/Pull Control Cable;
SCAT/SCEET Hose;
Lower Cowling Inlet Flange with Screen;
All Clamps, Bolts, Nuts, Washers, Rivets.

Caveat - this is copied text, not mine
"Heat muff I used 08-00473, they are showing 08-03900 but I wonder if it will fit, i don't think it would fit due to the oil cooler on the bottom. either is $126.95.
Control box 08-04000 $106.95.
Scat tube 05-29908 @ $7.50 a foot( I used less than 4 feet) $30.
Flange for intake 08-10350 $7.50
Total so far is 261.40
I used a push pull cable from Oreiley for $7.95 and band clamps for $2 times 4 plus a roll of high temp gasket material. Seems to me their price is a bit high. The aluminum spacers they have to fill the gap between the pipes and the muff look good but I question the $50"

I might have $100 in my heat setup. Vans has a triangle diverter box for $40 that works real well. I have a jab3300 . I built two 6 inch heat muffs with two 2 inch flanges on both that slide up the exhaust pipes after the three to ones. Air is delivered from a $6 vans NACA vent, thru one muff on the right manifold over to the other heat muff on the left manifold, then to the diverter. I stuffed some stainless scrubbing pads into the boxes to help heat transfer. On a recent flight over 12000 ft on a trip to Leadville, OAT was 15F and I was quite toasty inside. I did install a carbon monoxide detector too.

I'll try to take a picture and post it next time I'm down at the hangar.

Hi Robbie,
I was looking at my plans yesterday for the details on the lower firewall hinge and happened across everything needed for the heat muff is in the plans. It is somewhere near SNX-P13 but it is in the "P" section. I want to do the cabin heat also and was surprised to see it.
