Aerovee 2180 max fuel flow

Discussion of the Aerovee kit engine.

Aerovee 2180 max fuel flow

Postby petep » Thu Jul 13, 2017 6:40 pm

Working on my fuel flow report for DAR certification and am curious as to what max fuel flow people are seeing for the 2180 Aerovee. I am guessing about 6 GPH but would like to have that verified.
Thanks,
Pete

Aerovee 2180 max fuel flow

Postby Sonex1462 » Thu Jul 13, 2017 7:31 pm

With only an inline filter and fuel line all down hill from tank to Aeroinjector, 6 gals in the tank and nose raised to approximate climb angle I see almost 32 gal/hr.
Originally I had a gascolator and fuel flow sender in the fuel line. I also had a slight rise from the gascolator to the Aeroinjector. In that configuration I saw around 16 gal/hr flow.
Removing devices that restrict flow and making a straight down hill flow obviously greatly improves the flow.

I have seen the Aerovee take as many as 7 gallons per hour but never 8. I used 12 gph as my minimum for the fuel flow test but would have considered 11 acceptable.

I think I didn't understand your question.
FAA Circular 90-89B Flight Testing Handbook page 33 paragraph 1-19 section e provides the formula to determine the minimum fuel flow. For the 80 hp Aerovee it computes to 11 gph. It also describes the method you should use to do the flow test.

I thought he meant what actual fuel flows people are seeing in operation.
