Why does my 2002 Aerovee seep oil when...

Postby Stogie6 » Mon Jun 20, 2016 3:12 pm

A quick little history on this aerovee. I bought it assembled from a fella in Indiana. Got a nice deal on it with other components to include a zero time prop (since sold the prop). Anyway, long story short...finished all wiring, efis installation, etc. to a point where I ran the engine for the first time. Tweaked the timing and idle enough to not run it until time for taxing and first flight. But the real question is why would the engine seep oil from the prop/hub assembly when I tilt the plane on its nose? I had some riveting to accomplish and did not want to lay on my back in a hot Texas hangar. That work smarter, not "hotter" thing was making me think about comfort. I noticed after about an hour, there was a puddle of oil on the floor by the spinner. Hummmmm. Any ideas? My first thought is to not do that any more and work hotter! My second thought is that the oil (2.75 qts) gathered up to the nose of the engine and pressure pushed it over the oil slinger. Don't know but thought I would ask the collective group. Checked torque value on the block, everything was good.
And on a side note, if anybody was following my saga with the Discovery Lite iEFIS, I got it working like a champ. The credit goes to Josh Bardell. He is a steely-eyed missle man with this product.

There is no seal at the front of the crankshaft. There is an oil slinger to prevent oil from reaching the front where it can leak and a channel to return oil to the sump. Tipping it on its nose probably let oil drain directly from the sump out the nose.

I'm glad your EFIS is working well for you! Happy to assist anytime. I'll have some new screen designs before too long too.

How far forward? Past horizontal? As gammaxy pointed out there is no oil seal, so if you tipped it way forward then you're going to get oil coming out the hub.
