Hi Everyone,

I bought the new silicon rubber boots that Sonex offers during Oshkosh. I finished installing them yesterday and flew for the first time today.

Wow, what a difference.

For the last 30 hours my #3 cylinder had been running much hotter than the others. Compression was fine in all four. I suspected that the old "radiator hose" boots had become hard, leaking and thus were screwing up the mixture.

Today, I stood the airplane on it's tail and was getting as much as 610 fpm at 79 mph. Although #3 is still the hottest, I never could get #3 to go redline. I also wound the engine up to 3410 rpm and sill no redline.

It looks like I have my "Wisconsin Heads" back.

That looks like a much better option than the "radiator hose" style ones I have! After so long, the old style ones make it very difficult to remove the Y pipe intake tube after they're installed.

I'll certainly be upgrading to these the next time I need to tear into my engine!

Hope my engine comes with the new ones! I should be getting it in a week or two.

Thanks for the link. It looks like something I should add to my list to buy when heading out to transition training in a few weeks. Although it works I never liked the radiator hose solution. Even if they perform the same these give a much more finished look and will be worth the $30 to upgrade.

Was there anything else announced at Oshkosh that I'm missing (besides the turbo). We used to get posts from Sonex on the old sonextalk yahoo group announcing stuff like this but is seems like since things got switched to this forum we have been a bit abandoned from the factory on updates and announcements.

Hi everyone--I found what looks to be an identical boot on ebay--bought one for $7.81 including shipping--it arrived and looks exactly like the Sonex boot and fit perfectly so I just ordered 2 more--the price for the second two was $7.99 each. Anyway, here is the link--for some reason the price is now $8.26--still half of the Sonex price and free, fast shipping--the picture on the listing shows something printed on the boot, but the one I received had none--waiting for the other two.

Bob, I'm building my engine now, however, I will be in Texas for the next 3 weeks. Are the boots shown on the e-bay link you posted the correct size needed for the
AeroVee? Being here and away from my shop I have no way of measuring the intake manifolds on the head or the y-pipe tubing.

OK - OK But the YJ Racing.com website states - "Silicone hose is NOT compatible with fuel or oil."
Somebody want to explain that to me.
