I snapped a plug off in the head torquing to specs. I went online to all the VW web sites and everyone said not to torque that much. Just seat the plug and give it a little extra. Nothing scientific, just firm. It's worked really well for me and I don't get scared tightening the plugs.

Automotive plugs with the crush-type washer like we use on AeroVee engines don't really have a "torque spec". You are supposed to run them in until the gasket contacts the head, and then tighten them a quarter turn. It turns out that a quarter turn after gasket contact equates to about 12 lb-ft.
