No expert, but as far as output, most of these little generators were intended to be run on a pulley at X x Engine RPM. Running them direct drive I think they generate a lot less, which is largely the problem with voltage at idle. So I’m not sure the 80% rule of thumb really applies.

30 Amp Alternator

Postby n307tw » Thu Sep 20, 2018 5:06 pm

I wish Sonex would just ditch the whole lawnmower magnet/stator design and give us a way to attach a belt from the prop hub (possible integrated pulley?) to an external alternator. I’m sure we could easily fit a small 50amp alternator in there somewhere. More weight yeah probably but totally worth it for a good charging system. Just my $0.02.

I'd rather not have a belt. I like light and simple. Would just like to have simple work a little better. :-)

30 Amp Alternator

Oh I am on the same page as you Mike. My thinking was if the belt breaks you put a new one on. If the alternator fails pop a couple bolts and replace it. Plus most alternators have built in regulators. If something happens to your charging system now you have to troubleshoot if it is the regulator and if the stator fails or magnets lose their strength you have to pull the motor to repair it. I’d argue maybe the belt and alternator is simpler.

This is all a pipe dream anyway, it’ll never happen but it would be nice to have say a 50 or 75amp charging system rather than the 20. Or in my case 10amp that I need to upgrade to the 20. Blue skies Mike and thanks for putting together that Northeast fly-in, my son and I had a great time!
