On the RPM pickup, I have one off the Rotec electronic ignition module and one off the other mag P-lead. The RDAC has two RPM feeds so one goes to each. I display on the EFIS, left and right RPM like a twin. They are always within 1 or 2 RPM of each other.

Hi all,
One other thing to think of is blast tubes. We have them to the coils and regulator. Just to keep them cool. Just dont fly in the rain!

So while this thread is interesting, it has digressed from my original question: who is using a third party (non-Sonex supplied) (Kubota?) regulator on an AeroVee, and what is its part number. I understand that the Kubota RP201-53710 works with the Jabiru. Thanks.

Thanks, Glenn! Looks like a drop in replacement, and for about 1/4th the cost. At that price, we could fly with a brand-new spare in our toolkit!

Now: has anyone used the above-mentioned Kubota RP201 regulator on an AeroVee? Or another [better] regulator?

Don't mean to belabour the point, it's just that my Sonex-supplied regulator seems to be D.O.A. and while I'm pretty sure that Sonex would replace it, I wouldn't mind replacing it with a better/more robust regulator. The Kubota RP201 fits the bill if it would work with the AeroVee alternator.

A lot of reports of Kabota regulators that failed on Jabiru installations. I have a blast tube directing cooling air at mine and no problems in 300 hours. Mounting with its fins vertical helps cooling air flow. Also have seen reports of blown regulator that was mounted on firewall, burning through the firewall, so mounted mine on second SS plate formed to hat shape to keep it about 1/4" off the firewall, same plate mounts my 22,000 uf filter capacitor and alternator contactor.

The Kubota regulator has six leads. I don't think it would be a direct replacement.

I'd also be very wary buying a 15 dollar regulator to replace a 70 dollar one. Mowing grass in a lawnmower is one thing, mowing grass with a Sonex probably isnt as pleasant of an experience.

Yes, I mentioned the six connector pin-out in a previous post in this thread (B+ / B- / Ac / Ac / Sense / Idiot light). Doesn't mean it won't work, they're both regulators for PM alternators. Was hoping someone had tried...

As for the price, more $$ does not guarantee higher quality. If both come from same factory and have the same part number, they if fact may be identical, and the price difference is from middle-men and mark-up.

Point taken, though.

David: yes, am aware of Jabiru/Kubota failures, heat related no doubt. I also have a blast tube directed on my Jabiru 3300/Kubota reg. on my CH750. As well as my fuel pump and both coils.
