MGL Airspeed Calibration

MGL Airspeed Calibration

Postby Art Tiller » Mon May 20, 2024 4:58 pm

My Sonex has a Stratomaster Ultra Horizon XL. Drilling down through the menu's I come to "Calibration Menu" and then to "Airspeed Calibration". It says...

Airspeed calibration This function is used to calibrate the airspeed reading. It works in % relative to a nominal value. Your calibration certificate will give you the setting required for correct reading if no external airflow factors are present. In many aircraft installations it may be required to correct the reading to cater for errors created by the airflow around your aircraft. You can use the + and – keys to change the calibration factor.

I have a strong suspicion that my ASI reads 15 mph low. This is based on flying box patterns at altitude. Then comparing my airspeed with averaged ground speed.

Has anybody calibrated their IAS using this Stratomaster procedure? I do not have a calibration certificate.

Thank you

I have, but many years ago. In my case the reading appeared to be high. The number is set at 100% and you just fudge the percentage number up or down to match your true speed. So if your speed is indicated at say 95 knots but you have measured an average speed of 110 knots you would change the percentage number to 110/95 x 100 = 116%

Thanks Peter. I will try 114% and see what happens.

I found my Calibration Certificate. It says 105% for my MGL. I bumped it up from 100% and we shall see what happens next.
