We often used splices like that at Sikorsky. Not sure they use them in production, but we used them for IR&D.

I ordered that same kit last week, and we used it for the first time tonight. The splices work well, but take a surprising amount of heat from the heat gun to melt properly. The first couple we attempted did not melt all the way and pulled apart during the testing afterwards. The key is to keep heating until the solder ring turns from a cylinder to an elongated peanut. I think they are a neat product, but they're not any faster than a crimped butt splice and heat shrink tubing.

Used a ton of these things on snowmobile trailers years ago. If they will keep a trailer covered in snow, ice and salt going, they'll certainly last in an airplane environment.
