My empty weight

Postby JFYrineo » Wed Jan 15, 2025 10:08 pm

Was able to put the plane on scales and get a weight. The empty weight came in at 731 lbs. this is a SonexB, trigear, Jabiru 3300 gen4, lead battery, A/P servos, MGL avionics, combination of polished aluminum and vinyl wrap.

Does the 731 lbs empty weight look directionally correct with what others are seeing?

There is actually a database going and you can check it out here:
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=2933
On the second page is a link to the database, both old yahoo group stuff and new stuff. I should enter my info in. 674 lbs, Aerovee, polished, tailwheel, EarthX battery. I thought I was going to be lighter.
731 is on the heavy side from the data. But I know of a few others heavier. You must be close - it looks great!

My first Waiex taildragger in 2007 with paint, interior, and a 3300 Jab came in at right about 715. Yours seems about right in the real world with a nose gear, certainly if you have an interior and some equipment. My second Waiex, a B-model turbo was close to 760. It still flew awesome, until the aerovee swallowed a valve adjuster. Oh well!

I haven't seen too many built with paint, interiors, equipment, and comfort features that end up in the 630-650 range. They are out there with polish and minimal comfort features, but not the norm, I think.

Your plane should fly just great with the 3300 at that weight especially considering the recent gross weight increase from Sonex for 100 + HP engines.

Looks great. Have a ball and fly safe!

Lets not forget probably the only flying O-200 Waiex variant at 724lbs.
