Landing gear length

Postby T41pilot » Wed Jul 18, 2018 6:17 am

I'm currently working on the Titanium landing gear legs for a standard hear Model B. The plans call for a hole 1/2 inch from the end. The legs were not exactly 34 inches one being 1/16 longer and the other 1/8th longer. I measured 33 1/2 from the ends so that the length would be the same coming out the bottom of the engine mount and just figured the difference would stick out the top of engine mount. It looked like these holes were to fit the mount at the top and not for the axle. The legs were inserted in the mount and temporarily fastened at the top using those holes. My problem is that the plans call for 16 and whatever 64ths inches from the bottom of the fuselage to the tip of the axle (approx. 16 11/16ths) I'm assuming when the toe in is set. When I attach the axles and push them on all the way till they bottom out and get the toe in close, my distance from bottom of fuselage to tip of axle is more like 18 inches. The plans have been accurate so far so I'm at a loss as to why this turned out this way. So has anybody else experienced this and what should be done. It took a lot of effort to get the holes drilled at the top and the legs are indeed the same length at the bottom. Should I try to cut the legs maybe with a hacksaw or use that distance making sure the same amount on both sides and have the nose and sight picture higher by that amount? I'll be at Airventure Mon thru Wed and looking forward to meeting some builders. Is camp Sonex the place to do this or behind the Sonex Display area? In the meantime some of your thoughts on this would be helpful.

Landing gear length

I can only comment on my experience. I also had one gear leg slightly long, and it extends out the top.

I just adjusted my measurements accordingly.

Your mileage may vary

Here's a thread that covers my experience with landing gear legs, alignment, and length: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=3471&hilit=landing+gear
