Wingtips

Postby inventor » Wed Sep 25, 2019 10:11 am

I have my main spar bolted and riveted in and the inboard trailing ribs clecoed in. Now I am thinking about the outboard wings and looking at the wingtips. Does anyone have any input on the long wings vs the short wings as far as aircraft handling goes? I am considering cutting off the wingtips but wonder if aircraft stability will suffer.

Hi,

I fly a OneX with the shortened wing tips. Doesn't affect stability. Tracks straight and true. In calm air it will fly hands off for 15 seconds or so.

That sounds good. I would prefer the shorter wingtips so am leaning that way.

The photos I’ve seen of the factory ONEX prototype appear to show no wing tips. Look up Jeremy’s initial flight in the ONEX. It is my understanding that wing tips were added to achieve LSA stall speed for heavier pilots. I shortened my wing tips to the final wingspan of 19 feet.

I had a conversation with Jeremy way back and he confirmed that the wing tips were added to meet LSA stall speeds for heavier pilots. He said they were not really needed but as a manufacturer Sonex had to meet the LSA rules.

FYI. I save everything. Just returned to MN and measured the cut off pieces. I cut 8 inches from each wing tip. As stated prior, my assembled wingspan is exactly 19 feet.
