OneX & Sonex Empty Weight

Postby pfhoeycfi » Fri Aug 25, 2017 3:51 pm

I am curious to know what actual empty weights are looking like, especially if any Aerovee powered OneX builders were able to achieve an empty weight less than the specified 600#.

I would also be interested in knowing the same for the Sonex. I believe the B's have a specified empty weight of 620#...not sure what the legacy model was spec'd at.

any thoughts would be appreciated...

I know from a past survey that the average empty weight of a Aerovee Sonex was right about 650lbs. Mine came in at 652, which was 2lbs over my goal of 650, but my smoke system was not included in that goal weight so I would guess without that I would be under 650 by a couple pounds.

I do think it is pretty rare to find a Sonex that is at or below 620lbs, the ones that are usually have the Jab 2200

When I had my airworthiness inspection in October 2015 the weight of my AeroVee turbo powered Sonex taildragger was 685 pounds.

My legacy sonex is 667lbs as a taildragger and aerovee
There was a thread on here at one point where everyone listed their weights.

Most Sonex that I look at are around 670 lbs empty, give or take a few pounds. The B model might be a few pounds heavier.

Sonex A model, tailwheel, AeroVee, smoke system, all aluminum surfaces polished (paint on fiberglass, only): 655 lbs. A full paint job is said to weigh about 25# on a Sonex.

Without any paint you might be able to get close to 600 lbs for a Onex but I think 615 lbs is more realistic. I came in at 641 painted without any extras with an AeroVee before I switched engines.

Thanks so much for those replies. I also found the mentioned link to a spreadsheet showing Sonex weights, build options etc...a few pages down under general discussion. I should have asked this question months ago when I began researching. I assumed the 620# was real. For my only other build, the specified weight was achievable, with paint. Anyway it appears that for me, the std Aerovee is not an option in the S or W. Again, thats for my situation. It will work for me in the OneX, assuming 600 plus a few. So I'll look at some engine options and take another look at the OneX. Thanks....
