Pitot & static

Postby Carlos Trigo » Tue Feb 18, 2020 11:42 am

Guys

I am beginning to build the tail of a XENOS, and there is an indication in the plans to use the pitot & static inlets in one of the ruddervators.

Did you use this?
Or did you place the pitot & static anyplace place else?

Thanks
Carlos

I know Kip Laurie did on his Waiex. You can see it here:

Start @ 01:54, but the whole video is excellent and worth watching. Pretty sure he talked about it in another one, but I don't remember which.

Yes, I did this on my Xenos. I have a removable total energy probe mounted per the plans. I'm still building so I have had the chance to walk into it yet.

Not stabilator; Stabilizer. Stabilator is combined stabilizer and elevator. As long as we're being "picky".

Sikorsky Blackhawks have stabilators. One of my dad's patents.

I did a tail mounted pitot on my Waiex. Planning on using cabin air for static. This is what Kip did.

Be careful using cabin air for "static". Opening and closing vents at higher speeds can cause significant errors.

I also plan to use tail mounted pitot, but will use the position specified in the Moni plans for static. This uses a round head pulled rivet approximately half way between the wing and stabilizer, a few inches below the main longeron.

As long as we’re being picky, the XENOS does have stabilators!

Sorry, I'm not that familiar with the Xenos. All the pictures I've seen appear to have fixed stabilizers and ruddervators.

Thank you Brian

I am from and live in Portugal, so in Portuguese you would say “Benvindo Carlos”, but I feel welcome anyway...
