Gap seal and POH questions

Postby mike.smith » Fri Apr 25, 2014 5:08 pm

From my log site:
http://www.mykitlog.com/users/display_l ... 9546&row=1

Gap Seals:
A. Photo 1 is the root doubler where it goes over the spar caps. It's tight against the spar cap, so how do you attach the gap seal?
B. Do the gap seals stay unattached from the wing roots (free to go on and off), or do you attach them with sealant or adhesive?

POH Charts:
A. Many of you have nicely done charts in your POHs, like the one in photo 2. What did you make them with?

Thanks,
Mike Smith

Mike

For the gap seal where the spar is, I trimmed off the inner section, I could see no other way. The rubber either side holds that section down.

If you are considering gluing the moulding in place permanently. I would suggest having a test run fitting the wings, with rubber in place prior to gluing. I found it impossible to push the wings in far enough to insert the wing spar attach bolts with the seal in place. I have to bolt on wings first, then work the rubber moulding in after.

As for glueing the rubber in place, originally I did nothing. Every now and then the upper left end near the flap would come out in flight and start flapping around. Only about 12" would ever come out, but made enough noise to get my attention. Especially the first occasion.

I now use double sided tape under about the last 18 inches. It works well, can be cleaned off and replaced each time the wings come off.
