Just to clarify the costs a bit...if you haven't purchased your gear / breaks from Sonex yet, the cost to purchase the Sonex Hydraulic Brakes only cost me about $100 more than the drum brakes with machined cylinders. The $200 quoted above is just for the machined, drums only...there is still the cost of the brakes themselves. It would only be if you were upgrading your existing brakes where the cost would be much greater.

I'm just curious. When you ordered the hydraulic brakes with the airframe kit did it come with the master cylinder and installation kit? When you order them seperatly it is a $75 for the master cylinder and $25 for the installation kit on top of the $300 brake cost. The airframe order page only gives you the option of buying the $300 brake upgrade.

I'm scratch building so I ordered the wheels and brakes by themselves. The $100 difference that I quoted above was if I had bought the Sonex Wheels, Drum Brakes & Machined Drums vs. Sonex Wheels, Hydraulic Brakes, and Master Cylinder. At the time I purchased them, you couldn't do this completely through the web store, so I emailed Sonex what I was trying to do and that is where we came up w/ the final price.

Also, I did not order the Installation Kit, and to be honest, I'm not sure if they've corrected the issues w/ the installation kit yet or not...recent reports were that even if you ordered it you still had to do quite a bit of customization. It only took me a couple hours to do the entire thing from scratch.

I have a flying tri-gear Waiex and am now dreaming of a tail dragger. If I decide to convert her, I might just go with the Obrien gear legs and Sonex engine mount. Looks like at least with the Obrien, it has integrated axels. I can then keep my tri-gear legs as is if I sell the plane and want to market it as both tri and tail.

Kip, do you also not use any shims on the tailwheel rod? I noticed mine has a fair amount of play and considered using paper shims.

I have a little play back there but I have not bothered to address it. Operationally, its fine. One of these days...
