Source For 3/8 OD 1/4 ID Steel Tubing

Postby Direct C51 » Fri Jun 24, 2016 1:10 pm

I attached my spars and drilled my wing attach blocks to final size before assembling the wings. My intention is to use a 3/8" OD steel tube through the attach blocks as a drill guide to drill a 1/4" pilot hole in the wing attach angles, and then use a piloted bit to drill them to final size. I am now ready to attach the wings, and am having trouble sourcing a 3/8" OD 1/4" ID steel tubing. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Nate

Nate,
I got mine from A/C Spruce - BUT the OD was exactly 3/8" so it did not fit in the holes I reamed to .3725 to fit my AN6 bolts nicely. Also the ID was a little smaller than 1/4". I called in a favor with a friend with a lathe. When I am done I will make mine available to the community but that is a few weeks away.

Bryan, that sounds like it will work nicely. If I can't find a source for the tubing by the time you are done with it, I would certainly like to be first on the list to use it. I'll pay for shipping of course.

Thanks,

Nate

McMaster Carr has what you need. I bought some there to do my wing rigging.

Robbie, do you have a part number? All I can find is .245" or .277" ID. I think .245 would be too small to allow a 1/4" bit to enter, and .277" too big and allow the 1/4" bit to wander around.

Did you see my nifty trick for updrilling tubing without a lathe? In the middle of page 76:

I got mine from spruce. Had to remove a tiny bit off the OD with emery cloth whilst spinning it in the drill press. I had to run a 1/4" bit through the ID. A lathe would be nice but not necessary.

Apologies. I do not.
