I'd like to put an old school ball type slip indicator on my panel to compare against my MGL MX1. I'm not looking to put another hole in the panel. Any suggestions? Has anyone ever tried an industrial glass tube lev o gage (#4)?

Yeah!
Had a Level-O-Gauge in my last aircraft. Used double sided tape to stick it on the panel. Worked, but not dampened like an aviation one.
Level-O-Gauge have a very wide range of inclinometers - take your time in choosing the right one for you.

I have the Lev-o-gage 4. I mounted it sticking just above the top of the instrument panel on the pilot's side of the cockpit. Very happy with it.

If it is just a matter of verifying the MX1, thus temporary, I'd suggest 'yarn'. Get a length (say 6") of yarn and tape it to the top of the canopy right in the center. This is what most gliders use for some reason, it's what I used on my first sonex flight.

Thumbs up on the yarn. Added advantage it’s in your sight when looking out the window.

I've got about 300 glider hours flying behind a piece of yarn, and another 60 in helicopters. Does the yarn really work behind a propeller?

It might IF you put the prop on the tail

With the yarn you can practise your forced landings and check your yaw/slip indicator at the same time. Fun fact: U2s have a yarn for a yaw indicator, but they also don't have a prop on the front.

Yarn seems to work fine despite the prop.
