King KT76A transponder replacement

I have this older King KT76A transponder; the model with the big knobs. In fact- I have had two of them (model xxxxxxxx-00), and after some years they both failed.
What is killing these things? (Not voltage spikes: after 11 years in the Sonex I am still using the same Icom A200)
I am thinking of getting yet another 76A, this time the newer model with the smaller knobs (model xxxx-10). I have been told that it is a little more stable than the older one because of better cavity design.
Could anybody comment on this?
And is the model -10 a drop in replacement fir the model -00?
Thanks
Kai
