I too have had issues with RPMs. With it hooked through the alternator pickup I couldn't get it to settle down no matter what my settings were on the RDAC (dip switches/sensitivity/RPM1 or 2/new ground). I tried every conceivable combination I could think of. Sent an email to MGL and their suggestion was to use the pickup from one of the mags. I tried it and it worked great....for a little while. The main issue I had was the mag I was using as the pickup started to go dead after the engine got warm. I discovered the RDAC was providing a ground with the dip switch set in a certain position (can't remember if it was on or off now). I traced that down with a simple continuity test. Now it's working pretty consistently and my mag is staying on. I still get questionable readings (3600RPMs on climb out?!?!???) once in a while. I intend to adjust the sensitivity before my next flight. And now I'm going to reset like Bret did as well.
The obvious problem with using the mag for a pickup is the drop to zero RPM during a mag check. But I start with the other mag and get a good feel for what it should sound like before hand.
MGL Enigma FYI.
