The Trig 21 is a class 2 and is ok for light sport and slower and lower ops, however to work with next gen will require a class 1 transponder the Trig 22.
It looks like Sonex just came out and endorsed the Trig 22

In my neck of the woods, there are many places to fly without having ADS-B out equipment. In the event I must use services at a large airport, I can still fly into class D without a transponder. Nonethe less, I was planning on a Sandia STX-165 so at least could be seen on radar, until that is, radar is decommissioned according to the NextGen current plans and ADS-B takes over. According to J. Mac McClellan in the August 2014 Sport Aviation edition, TCAS systems in airliners and larger jets will still be required so that they could still see non-ADS-B airplanes that had transponders.

It's anybody's guess if these rules will change in the next five years.

Dale, one thing to consider for Sport Pilot and ADSB-Out.

Although I am currently flying with my medical and private certificate, I have and may fly under sport pilot rules in the future. Much of my flying is under a class B within the Mode C vail, so even as a sport pilot I would need to have ADSB-Out.

Of course with a private certificate even under sport pilot rules I can fly into controlled airspace, so I really think the thought of having ADSB-Out should be based on where you may fly, not necessarily what certificate you have.

I faced the same dilemma last year when i was trying to decide on a transponder. After much consideration about ADS-B, I decided to wait to see what new equipment will come out in the next five years. As a result, I went with the Garmin GTX 327 mode C transponder. It was $1800 from Aircraft Spruce and came with a wiring harness. It was relatively painless to configure and install and have certified.

Right now as you can see with all the speculation on this thread, nobody knows how the ADS-B requirements are going to play out. We do not even know if the FAA will certify ADS-B equipment we install ourselves (per EAA and AOPA letter of concern to FAA in December 2014).

For me, the worst case scenario is I buy a UAT ADS-B out transceiver (or similar) with internal WAAS and have a certified shop install it and certify it. Best case, the FAA allows a portable solution.

I just bought a STX 165R (mode c) transponder for the same reason. In the next few years the price of UAT ADS-B transceivers is just going to go down.
Also, at the moment there is no current path to certify a ADSB solution in any amatur built aircraft (http://macsblog.com/2014/12/can-you-ins ... maybe-not/). Thanks FAA.
