Radio interference

Postby Aldo » Sat Dec 20, 2014 5:58 am

Good morning everyone,

My Sonex came with an ICOM A-210 in the panel. The radio works fine across all rpm's for transmitting and receives well on the ground at low rpm's. Receiving an audible signal at higher rpm's, however, is a bit of a challenge. The static/interference is terrible. Just wanted to ask if anyone has any experience with this combo: Sonex/Aerovee/ICOM A-210

Thanks again,
Aldo

Hi Aldo, Not sure if u saw my post a few days ago about RFI interference . We have a jab 3300 and dynon efis radio and intercom. The efis puts out a lot of RFI. In trouble shooting and reading posts online especially the matronics postings we learned a few things. Check your coil to distributer HT leads. Are they good quality ? Carbon /graphite and not tinned copper? Noise suppressive wires? P leads shielded wires to mag /coil switches grounded? Where is your antenna located? Shielded wires used in harness out of radio? Cables from engine area to panel, ferrite beads (snug fit) put over cables? Goggle something like sonex aerovee icom radio interference and you will get lots to read. Good luck

Does the noise change significantly depending on which ignition you are using? I get a little noise from my primary (magnetron) ignition, but not as bad as you are getting. Knowing which ignition is causing it might help solve the problem. I am curious if anyone else has solved primary ignition noise--I suspect the spark plug cables might be the culprit.

I get some noise from my EFIS, but it is not noticeable once the engine is running over the engine sound. I don't have any ferrite beads installed, but I was careful about avoiding ground loops and making sure the headset jacks are electrically isolated from the airframe at the mounting point.
