hi all,
was reading the zenith site, one member had a 750 stol (UL 350)with a automotive type oil filter. it came loose and leaked all his oil. he made it back to the runway but the engine was toast. champion oil filters for cont/lyc have a tab to safety wire. we can do this with our engines running automotive type filters by putting a band clamp around the filter and securing with safety wire.

fly safe!

For what it's worth, the K&N filter I use has a stamped nut, similar to the aviation Champion filter, welded to the bottom to facilitate removal. That nut has a safety wire hole through it.

And it is that K&N filter that I had cracks develop in at the spot welds that hold that nice looking hex in place. Happened twice, second caused total oil loss. Found out later that others had found same problem years before. Beware.

Just don't fasten the safety wire to the nearby cylinder as one early Sonex flyer did. The vibration destroyed his filter. Come to think of it though, that was also a K & N oil filter. As David A. learned, a filter to avoid.
