Looks like Peter does frequent this site. I'm glad he's ok and also am curious to learn more.

I tried to find the report on this incident but couldn't find anything. Do you have a direct link to this?

Mike, on the kathryns website, if you scroll down to the right lower, the red background with white lettering , without the pics, you will get a roster of all the accidents listed for that day. Enjoy.
Hope your all enjoying the 2018 winter olympics on TV.
Be safe, fly safe!

I guys this is Peter Ellis the owner of N1611S.

As everyone know by now I lost my engine (seized up at about 500 feet AGL) I was beside a lake and thus landed on the lake.

When the prop stopped all that went through my mind was keep the nose down and fly the plane. Tried to find the shallowest water to land in by did not have much time to think about it.

There was about 5" of water and slush on the lake and I almost went over but it stayed upright.

Yesterday it about 9 hours to take it apart and transport it to my garage at home. I will let you know why the engine seized as soon as I have time to take it apart.

I will keep you posted. My wife says there are going to be some great deals on parts in the near future so keep posted.

Praise the Lord all went well and all I have lost is money.

I just read the report and it is incorrect.

They city was Mayfield NY. and the lake was the Great Sacandaga Lake, which is about 8 miles from NY0 or Johnstown NY airport.

Hi peter,
Very glad you kept calm and flew the plane to a successful landing. Let us know what your findings are. Will you rebuild the vw motor or re-engine to another powerplant?

Peter,

I'd like to add my thanks to the Lord and take my hat off to you for having the composure and skills to do what needed to be done to get the airplane down safely. It's been a long time since I had an engine quit on take-off (Ultralight Trainer on take-off with a student in the front seat) but I remember the part where your mouth fills up with cotton as your brain says, "this ain't really happening!"

Engines & airplanes can be replaced. It sounds as if the wife is indicating that maybe this isn't a great hobby for you to have. Just keep in mind the words that WW had printed on the back of a tee-shirt, "my ex wanted me to quit flying!"
